COURSES
Poole Printmakers offers printmaking courses for adults exploring a range of printmaking methods. To enquire about availability on any of our courses please email courses@pooleprintmakers.co.uk and one of our volunteers will provide you with the latest information.
We run several courses a year focusing in depth on individual printmaking techniques. These courses will teach you the principles and methods of the printmaking technique so that you can carry on printmaking at home.
We also run a special course - 'Introduction to Printmaking at Poole Printmakers' - which is for anyone wishing to become a member of Poole Printmakers. This course forms part of the mandatory training on the safe use of the studio, equipment presses and the processes we use and should be completed before applying for membership. It is both a broad introduction to Relief and Intaglio Printmaking and to the Poole Printmakers’ Studio.
Places for our popular courses are limited to 5 adults (sorry no under 18s) and are offered on a first come, first served basis. If we have a place available for you, we will require payment to confirm the booking, or the place will be allocated to the next person.
We are keen to share printmaking skills to all ages, and can discuss outreach opportunities on a case-by-case basis.

COLLAGRAPH PRINTING
Collagraph is a printmaking technique that uses a collaged textured plate to create an image that has different tonal patterns and textures.
During the weekend course artist Sue Smith will guide you through the process of how to apply different textures to a plate to create an image. You will begin with a test plate where you can experiment to see how different surfaces and textures will look when printed. You will be shown the process of preparing the paper, applying the ink and how to use the press. By the end of the course you will have a finished collagraph plate and several prints to take home with you.

GEL PLATE PRINTING
Gel plate printing is the perfect introduction in to printmaking without the need for too many specialist tools or printing presses, all you need is your gel plate, a roller, acrylic paint and a bit of imagination which makes it an ideal skill to practice at home.
The course will be led by Mike Poczapsky who is an experienced gel plate enthusiast. It will be a hands on course where Mike will show you the fundamental techniques that will help you explore the versatility of gel plate printing, including creating textures, producing mono prints and also transferring images from magazines. By the end of the course you will have a number of prints to take home with you and hopefully a passion for printing.

LETTERPRESS
The history of Letterpress dates back to its origins in the 15th Century. Come and make a statement with the vintage wood type at Poole Printmakers Studio. Using the fabulous studio Albion press, Letterpress printer Katherine Anteney will show you how to get the most out of this playful technique.

LINO PRINTING
This will be a hands-on day guiding you through the Lino Printing process from sketch to final print and everything in-between. Turning your creative ideas into one or two colour lino prints to take home.
Exploring materials, through experimenting with mark making we will explore your creative ideas and how best to translate them onto the lino. You will learn about print materials, registration, transferring of images, inking up, hand burnishing and proofing your image.
Giving you the confidence to carry on and exploring your creative ideas to develop your own style onto the next steps of your printmaking journey.

SCREEN PRINTING
A highly practical, hands-on two day course as an introduction to Screen Printing with tutor Steve Bamford. Also ideal as an introduction to Poole Printmaking’s screen printing equipment for those members who have some prior experience. During the course you’ll be able to experience stencil making techniques such as paper stencil and also photographic stencils.
Once you have booked onto the course you will be given a simple design brief so that you can prepare as much as possible before the weekend of the course, to give you maximum time actually experiencing the printing process.

SOLAR ETCHING
Solar Plate Etching is a prepared light-sensitive polymer surface on a steel backed plate used to produce fine photographic reproductions with great detail. It is a versatile intaglio technique that can be used to create images that originate from hand drawn artwork, photographs, or a mixture of both.
During this course, fine artist Debbie Lee will guide you through the process from creating your design through to exposure, development of plate, preparing the paper and printing.

INTRODUCTION TO PRINTMAKING AT POOLE PRINTMAKERS
If you are interested in joining Poole Printmakers, this course forms part of the mandatory training on the safe use of the studio, equipment presses and the processes we use and should be completed before applying for membership. It is both a broad introduction to Relief and Intaglio Printmaking and to the Poole Printmakers’ Studio.
The weekend long Introduction to Printmaking at Poole Printmakers course is a special course run several times a year dependent on volunteer availability.
It is a low-cost course designed to support our ethos of bringing the joys of printmaking into a wider, local community. We are proud to offer very small class sizes of up to five people, run with two of our experienced printmakers so that every student will get quality teaching and almost one to one attention. It’s also a great opportunity to make new connections with other printmakers and share differing approaches to printmaking.
On this course we cover basic studio use and broad introductions to relief and intaglio print methods, using various techniques including Lino Printing and Drypoint Etching. You will be introduced to safe use of the tools and equipment required for these techniques and we will use our large Victorian Albion Press and our Etching Press to produce multiple prints that you can take home at the end of the course. You can expect to leave on Sunday afternoon with about a dozen prints!
